‘Become Comfortable being Uncomfortable‘
“Growth occurs at the edge of our abilities” – Daniel Coyle
For athletes to improve their physical skills, they must put their bodies and mind under ‘stress’. Ever heard the saying “no pain, no gain”?
Are you:
- Seeing a lack of translation from training/practice to games/matches
- Find yourself cutting your sessions short when you get tired
- Feel as though you are just ‘going through the motions’
- Are unable to perform in high pressure situations
- Wanting to reach optimal performance but are falling short
These are all signs that you currently live inside your comfort zone.
There are many ways that athletes can push themselves outside of their comfort zone – elite athletes are the ones that are able to consistently live in this zone.
Here are a few suggestions to help you try stepping outside of your comfort zone:
- If you are the highest performer in your age group or at your current level – you can challenge yourself by moving up an age group or level to ensure you are consistently training and playing against people who are better than you.
- If you are really confident with one particular drill – stop training it the same way. Find a harder way to train the skill and continue training it until it becomes easy and then find a new way.
- If you are too scared to put your hand up in class because you are afraid of what others around you think about you – challenge yourself to answer one question, then two, then three – keep doing this until you no longer feel afraid.
Challenge yourself this week – jump outside your comfort zone and embrace the feeling of being uncomfortable.
